About this calculator
The sale price is the original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). When a second discount is applied on top, it comes off the already reduced price, so 30% plus an extra 20% is a total of 44%, not 50%.
Worked example
A 249 item at 30% off costs 174.30, saving 74.70. Add an extra 20% off at the till and it drops to 139.44 — a total discount of 44%, not 50%.
How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount.
- Enter the extra discount (optional).
- Read the result — it updates as you type.
Frequently asked questions
Is 30% off plus 20% off the same as 50% off?
No. The second discount applies to the reduced price: 100 × 0.7 × 0.8 = 56, so the total discount is 44%.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A 70 sale price after 30% off was originally 70 ÷ 0.7 = 100.
