About this calculator
Zakat is 2.5% of net zakatable wealth — cash, gold and silver, investments, trade goods and money owed to you, minus debts due now — once it has stayed above the nisab for a full lunar year. The nisab is the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver at today’s price; the silver nisab is lower, so more people reach it.
Worked example
With 95,000 in zakatable assets and 5,000 of debts due, net wealth is 90,000. With gold at 400 a gram, the nisab is 34,000, so zakat is 2.5% of 90,000: 2,250.

Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab?
The minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Multiply the weight by today’s price per gram.
Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?
Both are valid opinions. The silver nisab is lower, so it includes more people; many scholars recommend it as the more cautious choice. Follow the guidance you trust.
Is zakat due on my house or car?
Not on personal-use items such as your home, car or furniture. It is due on savings and on goods held for sale.
