About this calculator
ROI = (amount returned − amount invested) ÷ amount invested × 100. The annualised return (also called CAGR) spreads that over the holding period: (returned ÷ invested)1/years − 1. It lets you compare investments held for different lengths of time.
Worked example
Investing 10,000 and getting 13,500 back is an ROI of 35%. Over 3 years, that is an annualised return of about 10.52%.
How to use the ROI calculator
- Enter the amount invested.
- Enter the amount returned.
- Enter the time held.
- Read the result — it updates as you type.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good ROI?
It depends on the risk and the time involved. Compare the annualised return with what a low-risk option would have paid over the same period.
Why is the annualised return lower than ROI?
ROI is the total over the whole period; the annualised figure is the equivalent yearly rate.
